Why Does Intercourse Hurt

A million dollar question often asked by many women is why does intercourse hurt? Sadly, most of them keep quiet about this matter as they feel embarrassed to express this concern to anyone and lives with the pain without knowing the consequences it they will have to face later in their sex life. Coming back to the question I asked earlier, there are many conditions which can lead to pain during intercourse. This article deals with one of the most common and complicated cause of painful intercourse called vaginismus.

This is a condition wherein the lower muscles at the vagina close tightly and close the vaginal opening. Needless to say, this tight closing will naturally make any penetration extremely painful. Closing of the vaginal opening like this makes any kind of vaginal penetration painful. It is often found that this condition occurs due to the fear about sexual intercourse and usually the person affected would have experienced some tragic sexual experiences in the past. Also, they might not be having proper sex education.

The prevalence of Vaginismus

Generally vaginismus is more common than it is actually reported. It is just that women don’t say about this condition openly because they are too shy to do so. Please remember this is a harmful thing to do as vaginismus, if diagnosed early enough, is a condition which can be cured easily. But if kept a secret and left untreated vaginismus can get complicated and become difficult to treat. In reality, it is found that many women, suffer from this condition in a mild to moderate degree at some point of their life.

How to know if the pain during intercourse is really Vaginismus?

So, how do you differentiate the pain you experience during intercourse is due to vaginismus itself and not from something else? The easiest way is to consult a doctor when the pain starts and ask him. He will ask you some questions and will examine you.  It is to be noted that in vaginismus, the pain often comes only when penetration occurs. Also, in addition to the pain, she may also have a burning feeling during sex. Also, this pain will be consistent and will pop up every time she attempts an intercourse with her partner. Also, these women can’t use tampons and find it very difficult to undergo any kind of pelvic examination.

What to do if you have developed Vaginismus?

The treatment for this condition involves learning to relax the pelvic muscles, which tighten due to the muscle spasm. But don’t think this is a condition from which you can get rid of easily. Many weeks or months may be needed for that during which you will have to perform exercises like Kegel exercises with patience and dedication. Also, keep away from sexual intercourse while performing these exercises even though it creates a problem between you and your partner. But remember if you indulge in sexual intercourse during this period, you will end up with more spasms in your vaginal muscles which will make it more difficult to cure vaginismus. So, it is better you share your concerns with your partner and make him understand your condition in an amicable way.

Let us see how the Kegel exercises are to be practiced. These exercises simply involve contracting the pelvic muscles and holding them for some seconds and relaxing them. In order to find these muscles try to stop urinating suddenly. The muscles which help you do that are the pelvic muscles. Do at least 20 contractions and relax the muscles properly after each contraction. Once you become familiar with this exercise try to repeat the same with your finger inserted into your vagina.

So, in short if you are experiencing pain during intercourse consult a doctor or gynecologist as fast as you can and seek the necessary treatment.
