Stages of Baby Development
It is amazing to see your baby transform in front of your eyes. Especially, during the initial three or four months of their development, parents go through mixed emotions of pride, awe and worry at the same time. Parents can witness very quick growth in the babies during the initial 3- 4 months. However, each baby has its own growth cycle, and as long as it is within the reasonable time frame, parents need not worry about it at all. The first one month of a child’s development is rarely noticeable as a baby sleeps almost 20 hours a day. However, it is during these sleepy times that a child develops its sensory capabilities. This one month often goes unnoticed as parents cannot spot any signs of growth other than the size. The next two to three months is when you can spot your baby gaining physical capabilities as it tries to control its neck and head rather than just drooping on your support. This is also a time when your baby will start distinguishing between colors and will also try to visually explore the arena around him/ her. The visual and oral exploration will lead your baby to express delight as you could see him/ her smiling at things. The fourth month is when your baby will turn to familiar sounds coming from a particular direction. They themselves start making different types of sounds like a cry, a coo or a laughter. The fourth month is a time when a baby develops some strength and hence, improvises on his motoring abilities and thereby learns to roll over from one side to the other. Visual familiarity develops by the end of sixth month and kids develop a pattern of selective smiling on the recognition of certain faces, patterns, colors, etc. Their motoring ability also increases with the development and growth of torso and arms, a baby starts crawling on the knees with some support from his/ her arms. A baby only consumes milk till five months of age. This increased strength is also due to the introduction of solid forms of food into a baby’s diet starting from fifth month onwards. By the sixth month, a baby manages to sit on its own and tries opening his/ her mouth thereby suggesting an urge to eat solid food. Thus, it is reasonable to start feeding solid food to kids by this time. Other types of food that can be fed include pureed fruits and vegetables which are quite essential and healthy for their growth and development. Now as the months pass by, a baby develops more strength in arms and legs and by the end of the tenth month, it is able to stand on its own. A balancing act of a thumb and a forefinger is also demonstrated by a baby by this time. The next stage of development is walking. This is achieved by your baby within twelve to sixteen months of their birth. This is a time when a child is fully able to distinguish between familiar things and responds when you call him/ her. They also start waving as a gesture of recognition and understand when anybody says ‘no’. Thus, simple commands can now be given to your baby and they themselves can now communicate their requirements in one way or the other. Slowly and gradually, a baby also starts developing language skills also. Baby Health And Care
