Pregnancy Week 40 - 42Pregnancy Week 40At this stage you are now expecting your new baby. 2 out of 100 women will deliver on their expected due date, however, the rest will give birth 2 weeks earlier or later. Delivery or labor is usually divided by physicians into 3 different stages. During the first stage, uterine contractions will begin and your cervix will be dilating or widening very gradually. When your cervix is fully dilated (around 10 cm), the second stage of labor begins. During the second stage your baby migrates through the birth canal until it comes out to our world. The physician will then cut his feeding umbilical cord and then will pull gradually on this cord from your side to deliver the placenta and hence ending the third stage.
After delivery, your baby will be handed to a pediatrician to carry a certain test called Apgar score. This score measures vital signs such as the heart rate as well as skin color in addition to other measurements. A score of 7-10 means that your child is normal. If you do not deliver at your due date, don't worry because a big percentage of moms can stay for few days past their due date. However, you will be closely observed by your physician especially for the amount of fluid surrounding your baby. If labor is not initiated naturally, your doctor will recommend artificial induction of labor using some medications in addition to breaking your bag of water. If you are still pregnant, then you have to calm down and do not panic. Try to enjoy your last few days of pregnancy. Think about your new comer and how you will take care of him. Always be ready with your hospital bag. Average hospital stay for a vaginal delivery is usually 24 hours while for a cesarian section is 48 to 72 hours. You should be in close contact with your doctor at this time.
