Pregnancy Weeks 27 - 29

Pregnancy Week 27

You are sure very happy right now for making it to the 3rd trimester! You may be putting on more weight in the coming weeks which is normal for both you and baby. There will be very little room in your stomach even when you feel hungrier. Small meals daily should be continued and you can expect flatulence, indigestion and heartburn to occur. Trips to the bathroom will still be the same in frequency. Just hydrate yourself and do exercises daily such as swimming and walking which will help to relieve stress and improve blood circulation.

Try to check out the hospital where you want to give birth to be familiar with its facilities. Start to think of the birthing plan. Will you be taking medications? Childbirth classes are useful sources of information and are more informative when it comes to making important decisions like this one.

Baby may appear normal outside but both the lungs and brain are still growing. Baby’s length will almost increase by an inch this week. The eyelids are open wider as retinas get developed. She will start taking small breaths now.

Baby’s measurements: 14.3 inches or 36.5 cm, weight = 876 grams

Pregnancy Week 28

Rh negative women are given a  shot by their doctors this week. Have you thought of a name for the baby? Search online for a wide variety of baby names. Some websites give information about whether a name is teased often and if it is simple to say in other languages.

Eyelashes and eyebrows are now clear. Hair starts to grow. As baby’s body gets bigger, the skin smoothens and gain muscle tone. Breathing by the lungs is now regular though breathing of oxygen starts only after birth. Baby can now identify your voice and can move the head from side to side.

Baby measurements: 14.86 inches or 37.5 cm, weight = 2.27 lbs or 1004 g

Pregnancy Week 29

You can now consider things like whether you will be breast feeding or using formula. You may now notice a clear liquid leak. Antibodies, nutrients and fat are high in this fluid which is great for a newborn child as it can be easily digested. After birth, the baby will eat may be about every 2 hours. Your milk will come out around 3 to 5 days from childbirth. Without requiring any measurement or temperature check, your milk is perfect for your baby. As the baby grows, your milk contents change.

When you nurse the baby, you will release the oxytocin hormone. This contraction – inducing- hormone assists your uterus in being pulled back into place. You could feel some cramps as this happens. Lots of calories are burned while nursing. It takes practice to know how to nurse well. This also goes with utilizing a breast pump. Think about registering in a breastfeeding class.

Other issues to think about are perineal massage which helps in reducing risks of episiotomy or tears during childbirth. Also, if the baby is a boy, will you have him circumcised?

Accumulation of fat goes on and the baby’s brain now controls its body temperature. The baby now starts to move a lot from side to side. The head is just upward. However, the baby will soon turn downwards getting ready to be born.

Baby’s measurements: 15.1 inches or 38.5 cm, weight = 2.55 pounds or 1152 grams
