Postpartum HemorrhageA very serious, but rather uncommon complication of pregnancy is called postpartum hemorrhage. It is heavy bleeding associated with pregnancy which happens just after delivery. Once, this was a really a dangerous situation but not so now if treated in the correct way. Postpartum hemorrhage is found to happen when the uterus refuses to contract after a long and exhausting labor. This can happen due to a variety of causes. Some of these causes are a large baby, a traumatic delivery, a uterus that was swelled too much due to multiple births or due to excess amniotic fluid. Postpartum hemorrhage can also happen due to a strange fashioned placenta or one that parted with uterus prematurely. Other causes of postpartum hemorrhage include fibroids that put a stop to regular contractions of the uterus or a general weakness in the mother such as preeclampsia, extreme fatigue or anemia. Sometimes, a wound in the uterus, vagina, cervix or around pelvis area can also cause extreme postpartum hemorrhage that can occur instantly after labor. Also, if the uterus has turned inside out while the delivery happens or ruptured, it can cause postpartum hemorrhage. This condition can be caused even after a week or two after delivery if the remains of the placenta are held in the uterus. You should be careful not to develop an infection during postpartum as they can also cause postpartum hemorrhage. It is found that the chances of postpartum hemorrhage are more in mothers who had an abruptio placenta or placenta previa before delivery. In very rare cases, the reason of postpartum hemorrhage can also be a bleeding disorder in the mother which was previously undiagnosed and that is due to the use of medicines like aspirin that can obstruct the blood clotting. Also, genetic causes can exist for postpartum hemorrhage. The major symptoms of postpartum hemorrhage include unusual bleeding after delivery. This bleeding will be so strong that you will be requiring more than one pad an hour continuously few hours and the blood expelled will be bright red in color even after four days passed since delivery. This type of bleeding will not slow down and will happen in a constant high rate continuously. Other symptoms postpartum hemorrhage is that you will be getting bad odour to your blood discharge and large blood clots about the size of a lemon or even bigger will be expelled from the uterus. Also, you can experience swelling or pain in the lower area of the abdomen even after the first few days of delivery. Postpartum hemorrhage is usually treated depending on its cause. Your doctor may try some of the following methods to stop the continuous bleeding. A uterine massage, administration of drugs like prostaglandins , ergometrine, or oxytocin , removal of any retained placental fragments , find out and repair of any lacerations, etc are some of them. If bleeding is still not ceased after trying all these methods, further measures will have to be taken like giving intravenous fluids, a blood transfusion or the administration of drugs which helps in the clotting of the blood in case blood coagulation failure is the problem. Also, antibiotics might have to be administrated to prevent infection. In rare cases, doing a surgical dressing with gauze or blocking of the main artery in the uterus will be needed to stop bleeding for 6 to 24 hours. If everything else fails, as an ultimate cure uterus removal may be practiced. In most cases, the chances of successful recovery of mothers with postpartum hemorrhage are high.
